History –
Formed on 11 December 1947 (CAO Supp 72/48) and designated as #2302 The South Saskatchewan Regiment Cadet Corps and affiliated with The South Saskatchewan Regiment. With the disbandment of the affiliated unit in 1968, the Corps was re designated #2302 Weyburn Legion Cadet Corps and affiliated with The Regina Rifle Regiment. The affiliated unit received the title “Royal” in 1984 and was re designated Royal Regina Rifles and affilation to the cadet Corps was changed accordingly. The Corps is sponsored by Branch #47, Royal Canadian Legion, Weyburn. 2302 South Saskatchewan Regiment Cadet Corps was formed 11 Dec 47 under the sponsorship of Branch 47, Royal Canadian Legion, Weyburn and affiliated with the South Saskatchewan Regiment (RF). affil.: South Saskatchewan Regt, Dec 11, 1947. Affiliation with the South Sask Regiment was cancelled 30 Nov 64 and on 1 Dec 64 affiliation was resumed with The South Saskatchewan Regiment. Memorandum 0 1901-0012/0 (D Res (Army)) dated 1 Jun 65 changed designation to The South Saskatchewan Regiment (Legion) Cadet Corps effective 1 Dec 64. Message Unclas Cdts 1637 dated 28 Nov 72 changed affiliation to the Regina Rifles Regiment. Effective 10 Jul 82 the Regina Rifles Regiment redesignated as the Royal Regina Rifles. Message 0075 dated 21 Jan 85 changed designation to 2302 Weyburn Legion Cadet Corps.

THE HISTORY OF ARMY CADETS IN WEYBURN

The first Army Cadet Corps was originally formed on 13 November 1914, and designated “563 High School Cadet Corps”. 563 High School Cadet Corps was affiliated to the 95th Saskatchewan Rifles and its sponsor was the Weyburn High School.
On 1 January 1920 563 High School Cadet Corps was re-designated “563 Weyburn Collegiate Institute Cadet Corps”.
On 1 September 1920 it was re-designated as “563 South Saskatchewan Regiment Cadet Corps”.
On 1 September 1924 it became “563 Weyburn Regiment Cadet Corps”.
563 Weyburn Regiment Cadet Corps was disbanded on 16 December 1929.
On 11 December 1940 it was re-activated and designated “563 Weyburn Collegiate Institute Cadet Corps”, and was affiliated to the South Saskatchewan Regiment. 563 Weyburn Collegiate Institute Cadet Corps was disbanded on 17 March 1944.
On 11 December 1947 an Army Cadet Corps was formed and designated as “2302 South Saskatchewan Regiment Cadet Corps”, and was sponsored by Branch # 47 of the Royal Canadian Legion. 2302 was affiliated to the South Saskatchewan Reserve Force.
On 1 December 1964 with the closure of the South Saskatchewan Regiment B Company located in Weyburn, the Corps was re-designated 2302 SSR (Legion) Cadet Corps, and was affiliated to the South Saskatchewan Regiment’s Headquarters Company in Estevan.
With the closure of the South Saskatchewan Regiment on 8 September 1968 the Corps was re-designated to its present name, “2302 Weyburn Legion Cadet Corps”. 2302 WLCC was affiliated to the Regina Rifle Regiment. The Corps was badged Royal Canadian Army Cadets.
On 1 November 1984 with the name change to the Regina Rifle Regiment, the Corps became affiliated to the Royal Regina Rifles. On 5 March 1988 the Corps re-badged to the Royal Regina Rifles.
On 13 May 1988 at the Corps 40th Annual Inspection the Reviewing Officer was Major-General John L. Sharpe, Commander, Canadian Forces Europe. MGen Sharpe started his military career in 2302 RCArmyCC, in the 1950’s; he held the rank of Cadet Captain. Colonel Randy Brooks, Commander Saskatchewan Militia District, and former Commanding Officer of the Royal Regina Rifles, also got his start in this Corps.
On May 8th, 2002, at our 54th Annual Ceremonial Review, MGen (Ret’d) Sharpe, Colonel Commandant of the Royal Canadian Army Cadets, was once again our Inspecting Officer.
The Corps parades every Tuesday evening from 1900 hours to 2130 hours in the Royal Canadian Legion Hall, Weyburn.
The Corps is always recruiting; teenagers 12 – 18 may enroll at any time throughout the year. We are also looking for officers. Corps Officers are recruited from the community. We are also looking for Volunteers to assist with Corps operations.
